Look, it's pretty basic, if he relies on anyone other than himself for his own guidance, he is in a cult.
If he relies on anyone other than himself.......for his own guidance....he is in a cult.......
are you serious?
It is a fact: He's in a cult, and that's that. All religions are cults.
Ok. Well you are certainly entitled to your own opinion. Right? Right. Glad we have that settled.
Emo, thanks. I've been thinking about you since the other day. Wondering how you are doing.
The set-up looks pretty much like the Anglican church - there are what I call 'ultra-catholic' (bells and smells!) congregations through to very liberal ones.
That is what I was thinking.
There doesn't appear at first glance to be much of the rigid dogmatism of the Roman Catholic church, most likely because their key 'fallout' is their refusal to accept Papal infallibility.
Exactly.

From a google search:
Definitions of cult on the Web:
- adherents of an exclusive system of religious beliefs and practices
- fad: an interest followed with exaggerated zeal; "he always follows the latest fads"; "it was all the rage that season"
- a system of religious beliefs and rituals; "devoted to the cultus of the Blessed Virgin"
wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn- In religion and sociology, a cult is a group of people (often a new religious movement) devoted to beliefs and goals which may be contradictory to those held by the majority of society. Its marginal status may come about either due to its novel belief system or due to idiosyncratic practices that cause the surrounding culture to regard it as far outside the mainstream.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cult- In traditional usage, the cult of a religion, quite apart from its sacred writings ("scriptures"), its theology or myths, or the personal faith of its believers, is the totality of external religious practice and observance, the neglect of which is the definition of impiety. Cult is literally the "care" owed to the god and the shrine. ...

Hey Matt and F2T, ok the thing is this....
For the sake of argument, let's say you are right (which is a whole other thread in itself perhaps) even then it still makes sense to know who you're dealing with. And if people are talking to him (or anyone else for that matter) it just makes sense to Know what the guy actually believes and teaches.
As for whether or not this religion is a cult, I know that Nvr started an interesting thread a few days ago that would probably shed some light for me on the matter of religion period. At this point where I'm at, I'm not prepared to say he's stuck in another cult. That doesn't mean I think I'm right and you're wrong, only that I don't have enough information to say you are right.

Now that's a good catch Moshe:
cath·o·lic (kath'?-lik, kath'lik)
adj.
n. Catholic
A member of a Catholic church, especially a Roman Catholic.
[Middle English catholik , universally accepted, from Old French catholique , from Latin catholicus , universal, from Greek katholikos , from katholou , in general : kat-, kata- , down, along, according to; see cata– + holou (from neuter genitive of holos, whole).]
catholically ca·thol'i·cal·ly (k?-thol'ik-le) adv.

Sparkplug, I think sometimes certain things just get a little lost in a thread.. And I think others caught on before me (nvr is one), I just made a thread out of it
Edited to add: The thing that caught my attention was their stand on sexuality and birth control are completely different than the Roman Church.
good evening from "the great white north",jwd!
!..this is an incredible board..we are all so lucky to have our hosts, mods and (most)members of this site..lol!
!.....so many ideas.so many personalities.so much exchange of knowledge and ideas.right here on jwd!.....this thread was inspired by another thread..thank-you "hidden window"!.....i hope this thread inspires other "ideas",just like i was inspired by another thread......................many of us want to show our loved ones and the rest of the world, the "real wbt$".....we want to get our loved ones out of a "cult"..and..the international political world will bring the wbt$ down, when they can no longer disguise themselves as a religion.....the wbt$ is a political organization, disguised as a religious organization seeking "world domination"!.....most of us are not ready to take on a billion dollar organization, the wbt$.....we only want our families back!.....not all jw`s are ready to read ray franz`s:"crisis of conscience"..or..barbera andersons new cd:"secrets of pedophilia in an american religion.jehovah`s witness`s in crisis"..but..some are!
Apparently for some odd reason my local library doesn't outright accept donations, however, here in MI one can make a request for a book.
And that is on my list of things to do.

Why thank you Nvr! I don't want to come across all jw-y to people.
I especially liked this:
It's Catholicism Reloaded.
I honestly thought the web page was pretty interesting. I had heard of Old Catholic before but didn't know what they believe. So I really hope people take the time to visit the websites.

Hello, my name is Fr. Joseph Price, I am a priest in the Old Catholic Church of North America, I grew up a JW, was heavily involved in the organization until I removed my self after 17 years. Faced with having to start life over, redefining myself, and relearning my faith as a Christian, I have long desired ministering to JW's and ex-JW's alike. Once I completed my studies and was ordained a priest, I am finally able to devote the time required to outreach and support of those associated with the JW's. I am actively available both online and in person for speaking on JW's, their beliefs, practices and teachings, talking to individuals about their experiences with the JW's, and currently run a support group that meets once a month for socialization and discussion about JW's and our lives that were effected by the organization.
Link from his site re Old Catholic Church of NA:
The Old Catholic Church of NA is Not affiliated with The Church in Rome.
I'm not trying to be a beotch here, and I am not seeking to offend anyone, but there seems to be a large misconception of what Catholic Church he is affiliated with.
